Biology Final Exam Project

The Final Exam Project is due by May 25, 2020.

Pick one of the two below options for your Final Exam Project, complete it, and submit it to me by May 25th or earlier.

Final Exam Project Option 1

Who knows how long this pandemic will affect our lives, so I want you to be prepared when you go out in public.  For this project, you must put together a kit for going out into public and send me a picture of the contents of your kit.  Your kit must include the following 2 items:  1) a face mask and 2) a bottle of hand sanitizer/isopropyl alcohol or gloves.  You should also include one additional third item of your choosing.  Some possible additional items could be cash, tissues, snacks, disinfectant wipes, safety glasses, etc.

Final Exam Project Option 2

You and your family need to be prepared as this pandemic continues.  For this project, you must put together a list of 25 items that your household should have on hand to endure this pandemic.  (I easily made a list of 35 items, so 25 items for you should not be difficult.)

Karyotype Activity – Write all of your answers for this activity on notebook paper and submit the answers once the packet is complete.

Thursday May 7, 2020:  Read the Pre-Lab Discussion on page 143 of the Karyotype packet.

  • For a normal human karyotype, there would be 23 homologous pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes.
  • Question 1: Define Karyotype
  • Question 2: Define homologous pair

Friday May 8, 2020:  Read Procedure Part A. Analyzing a Karyotype and study Figure 1.

  • The karyotype pictured in Figure 1 belongs to a normal human male.
  • The chromosomes in homologous pair 1 through homologous pair 22 are autosomes.
  • The chromosomes in homologous pair 23 are sex chromosomes.
  • One of the sex chromosomes in homologous pair 23 is a bigger X shape, called an X chromosome. The other sex chromosome in this pair is a smaller x shape, called a y chromosome.  Since the sex chromosomes in homologous pair 23 are an x chromosome and a y chromosome the Figure 1 karyotype must belong to a male.
  • Question 3: Define Autosome
  • Question 4: Define Sex Chromosome
  • Question 5: What would the two sex chromosomes in the 23rd pair be if the karyotype belonged to a normal human female?

Monday May 11, 2020:  Observe the Karyotype pictured in Figure 3 and answer the following questions.

  • Question 6: How many autosomes are in the karyotype pictured in Figure 3?
  • Question 7: How many sex chromosomes are in the karyotype pictured in Figure 3?
  • Question 8: Are there any abnormalities in the karyotype pictured in Figure 3?  If so, where?

Tuesday May 12, 2020:  Observe the Karyotype pictured in Figure 3 and answer the following questions.

  • Question 9: Is the karyotype pictured in Figure 3 that of a normal person or a person with a genetic disorder?  If the person has a disorder, then identify the disorder.
  • Question 10: Does the karyotype pictured in Figure 3 belong to a male or a female?

Wednesday May 13, 2020:  Observe the Karyotype pictured in Figure 4.  The person has a disorder due to the abnormality in the 23rd pair.  Research and answer the following questions.

  • Question 11: What is the name of the disorder of the person in Figure 4?
  • Question 12: Is the person in Figure 4 a male or a female?

Thursday May 14, 2020:  Observe the Karyotype pictured in Figure 5.  The person has a disorder due to the abnormality in the 23rd pair.  Research and answer the following questions.

  • Question 13: What is the name of the disorder of the person in Figure 5?
  • Question 14: Is the person in Figure 5 a male or a female?

Friday May 15, 2020:  Complete and submit the Karyotype Activity Questions

A hard copy of this test is available at the school.  This test is also on my webpage as an assignment, I sent it to you in an email, and I will send it to you via text.

This test is optional.  Remember, if you do better on this Unit Test it replaces your lowest test grade for the 9 weeks.  Taking this test cannot hurt your current average, it can only improve your average.  You may use your notes on this test.  This test must be submitted to me electronically through Gradecam by Tuesday.

If you can't send it electronically then deliver it to the school and have them put it in my teacher mailbox.  It is best to send it electronically because this ensures social distancing.
I don't need the bubble sheet unless you are bringing the test to the school.

Grape Activity Instructions

You should include the following in your Grape Activity Write Up:

Question:  What will happen to the mass of three grapes if one is placed in water, one in sugar water, and one in grape juice for 96 hours?

Hypothesis:  If one grape is placed in water, one in sugar water and one in grape juice for 96 hours then the mass of the grape in water will ___________, the mass of the grape in sugar water will _______________ and the mass of the grape in grape juice will _______________.

(I was uncertain of the data for some of the groups so I would like everyone to use my data)

Create a Data Table for the following information:

Initial Mass of Grapes:  Grape in Water  - 13.92g, Grape in Sugar Water  - 15.89g, Grape in Grape Juice  - 16.26g

Final Mass of Grapes:  Grape in Water - 16.05g, Grape in Sugar Water - 12.86g, Grape in Grape Juice - 16.26g

Analyze Data and Answer the Following Questions:

What kind of solution was each grape in (hypertonic, isotonic, or hypotonic)?

Did each grape's mass increase, decrease, or stay the same?

If the mass increased or decreased then by how much?

Explain why the mass of each grape increased, decreased or stayed the same, by describing what happened with the movement of water into and out of the grape's cells.

One observation you might want to include is the final appearance of the grapes.  The grape in water was so swollen it burst in a few places, the grape in sugar water looked shriveled, and the grape in grape juice basically looked the same.

Conclusion:  When one grape was placed in water, one in sugar water and one in grape juice for 96 hours the mass of the grape in water  ___________, the mass of the grape in sugar water _______________ and the mass of the grape in grape juice _______________.  Therefore, the hypothesis was _______________.
