so from the very simple handheld lines at Van leeuwen Hawk used to the compound light microscope today and even further we have a wide variety of tools that has helped us see cells overtime compound light microscopes are given that name because they two or more lenses and he's light in order to see the medium or the specimen these can typically magnify up to about 1500 times at their most powerful here's some different examples of what compound light microscopes look like there's some Haitians in the structure of these microscopes in some cases there's one eyepiece others there's two but the basics are all there they still have the coarse and fine adjustment they have the ocular and objective lenses and they all have about the same not a power a scanning electron microscope is something that is much more powerful than a compound microscope so what this does is it pushes a beam of electrons over a specimen and when they bounce back that creates an image and it's 3D so it shows you the surface of that object and it's very detailed very realistic and can be magnified up to about 500,000 times so the scanning electron microscope or at the end look something like this kind of like a supercar from the 80s like very large they're very very expensive and they're extremely powerful a summer microscope is called the transmission electron microscope or tem these microscopes electrons through the Sesame as opposed to bouncing off the surface and so these only offer two dimensional images but they show the internal details of the cells rather than the surface so these are very useful in a different way these can magnify hundreds of thousands or even millions of times and like the sky microscope the transmission electron microscopes are very large and very powerful sounds and extremely expensive most Laboratories wouldn't have access to microscope is powerful this is an image of red blood cells red blood cells as they would look under each of these microscope types so we have the compound microscope which shows you very basic details of the red blood cells you can see the general shape and size relative to one another but there's not a lot of details scanning electron microscope or sem shows you a very detailed image of the surface of the cells and then the transmission electron microscope or tem shows you basically across cut the inside of the red blood cell so it's only two dimensional image show you a different part of that cell and that also is important to scientists as a study different cell structures are going to want to make sure you understand cell theory and the researchers that contributed to it as well as some of the different types of microscopes that could be used to study cells
