so we said in our lessons about ecology before that populations will fluctuate within an ecosystem resources and their availability will also fluctuate and true is energy and materials like organic matter so I'll require matter and energy in order to exist and because you cannot create or destroy matter and energy they have to recycle and reuse it within the ecosystem so we just bring it from one form to another the cycling pattern energy occurs through interactions among different organisms so it takes autotrophs and heterotrophs living and nonliving processes between organisms and their physical nonliving environment to make that happen. If you love the energy releasing chemical actions that give all living things energy for the life functions are required to exist and they also provide the materials for growth and repair of tissue in living things the carbon cycle is important component of an ecosystem this is how we take carbon from one natural form to another and maintain its abundance within an ecosystem so carbon is one of the most important types of materials because it's one of the basis of all organic molecules carbohydrates oceans lipids and nucleic acids so carbon is critical for living systems and it's one of those key ingredients one of the characteristics of life is that all living things have organic molecules proteins lipids nucleic acids carbs in all those four groups have carbon within them so carbon found in the atmosphere throughout minerals rocks and fossil fuels and examples of those would be natural gas trolling on call wooden soils and also aquatic sediment if not just land-based element and ecosystems but carbon is very important in an aquatic setting a well organism living things are very important in recycling carbon from one form to another within an ecosystem two processes that we've already talked about are photosynthesis and cellular respiration so photosynthesis is when organisms take in carbon dioxide from the app here because they need that as one of their reactions or ingredients for photosynthesis to occur when they do that they converted into simple sugars like glucose so photosynthesis plants take in CO2 from the atmosphere into sugar glucose which also contains carbon cellular respiration is the opposite process so rather than storing energy we're releasing energy so this is when organisms break down the glucose that happens for both autotrophs and heterotrophs and animals do respiration the breakdown of glucose and release the carbon into the atmosphere back as carbon dioxide so when a plant stores CO2 as sugar and we eat that plant our body next on the glucose and it releases carbon to our breath as carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere another process that helps maintain carbon's abundance in the environment is decomposition so in living things die decomposers those really important there's an ecosystem for cleaning up will break down the carbon compounds so when that happens they enrich the soil or the sediments in the Aquatic setting weather is fresh or saltwater so they put carbon back into the soil and they also are eventually released into the atmosphere once again as CO2 that's one of the most common forms of carbon in the environment another method is just converting those biochemical compounds from one form to another so we naturally store carbon in those organic molecules proteins lipids and nucleic acids when consumers whether they're herbivores or carnivores or the plants or animals when they eat plants or animals some of those compounds are used for energy so some of the compounds are broken down and used for cellular operation to release ATP to some of that carbon is used to make energy some components are converted to compounds that are incorporated into the consumers body being it becomes a part of the tissues and the different Oregon organism and other compounds like methane are different types of gases like CO2 are released to the atmosphere again so we can convert those carbs lipids proteins and nucleic acids into various forms summer Incorporated summer used for energy and others are released back into the environment combustion is another example of process involved in the carbon cycle this is when we take wood or fossil fuels again that's like natural gas or coal those are actually formed from once living organisms ancient living things that over vast periods of time have turned into fossil fuel that's why we call it fossil fuel when we burn those things CO2 gets released into the atmosphere so as we use gasoline in our cars when we use oil things like that when we burn coal we're using Hills fossil fuels and releasing CO2 back into the environment carbon actually has some effects on the environment so they can be positive or negative but we're seeing more Pacific reactions with the environment as time goes on as we continue to study these things so some of the effects of increasing the atmospheric carbon dioxide a natural and agricultural ecosystem so whether it's just a naturally occurring ecosystem like a forest or a marsh or something or if it's Farmland that we really care about because we rely on it for a food higher temperatures caused by carbon and shifting climate patterns meeting places are becoming warmer or cooler than they used to be those can change the areas where crops are growing back and that will affect the makeup of natural plant communities so certain things that have always done well in a specific region might not grow as well anymore or some of them might grow better just slightly shifted what is the most effects of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide on Sam's is changing their rate of photosynthesis so you can increase the rate of photosynthetic carbon fixation by leaves mean you're taking in more CO2 to do more photosynthesis so some crops and other plants very vigorously are very strongly and they might use water more efficiently and response so some of these plants and environment with more carbon dioxide are going to become much more productive but that's not the only effect that carbon has on the environment the greenhouse effect is a normal natural process is the normal warming effect that gets that occurs when gases trap heat into the atmosphere has happened so the greenhouse gases don't let the so basically it comes down towards the Earth but then it's prevent I'm leaving after that so heat gets released by Earth and it gets trapped under those gases in the atmosphere so it's solar energy from the Sun radiant or solar energy penetrate the Earth's atmosphere it warms the some of this energy is radiated is he away from the earth and some of it does escape into space as some of that energy goes elsewhere and leaves the Earth and doesn't warm it further but some of that heat is absorbed by those greenhouse gases which include carbon dioxide or CO2 202 just means oxygen in the form that we breathe and then there's nothing that's not carbon surrounded by for hydrogen's and water vapor which is water in a gaseous form some of it gets returned to Earth so although the greenhouse effect is a natural process Inspirion portent that helps keep the climate on earth warm enough to help support life because I do know when the coldest places on Earth there is very few living things warmer places life seems to flourish but the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is going to cycle around the Earth in various ways and mostly in relation to the volume of the ocean covering the Earth is salt in the salt water oceans is going to absorb some of the carbon dioxide and it's going to convert it into different salts some of those salts are calcium salts others are carbonate salts the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is partly in response to the degree to which plants and other autotrophs photosynthetic organisms cover the Earth and absorb CO2 the rest is based on how much we're producing through various processes some of which like combustion we can control to a certain degree so the greenhouse effect is here to warm the Earth and make sure everything stays a correct temperature for supporting but it can be a little too can cause a little too much warming in this table to show the difference in what happens based on the amount of carbon set an atmosphere so if you have a higher amount of CO2 in your atmosphere the greenhouse effect increases which increases the average global temperature that's going to increase your plan cover on Earth because there's more CO2 in a warmer environment for plant growth increase the rate of photosynthesis which means you're increasing how much CO2 is absorbed by plants and your decreasing how much CO2 is in the atmosphere if you lower the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere you're going to decrease the greenhouse effect decrease Global temperature you're going to decrease the amount of the rate of photosynthesis the amount of CO2 in and you're going to increase how much atmospheric CO2 exists so the greenhouse effect talks about how he is trapped along our Earth and the other portion of this video that you need to make sure you understand are the different processes that help cycle carbon in and out of the ecosystem
