A simplified description of the steps that take place during cellular respiration.

hi guys miss Lovelace I am in one of the most use rooms of my house I workout room and I brought you in here for two reasons first to let you know that you should be doing something good for your body everyday to stay fit because a fit person is able to fight off illness is more than a person who is unfit the reason I brought you in here is it talk about cellular respiration so let's get started this is a grand tour of our small workout room there is a workout ball we have some free weights Billy guarding over us there is a workout bench squat rack big old bar there is our stationary bike and the piece of equipment that I used the most there is my treadmill so I'm fixing to go for a run on that so here I am on my treadmill and I'm fixing to go for a run and when I get finished I will come back and we will discuss exactly what was happening in the mitochondria of my sales as I was exercising and I'll even let you know how far I went and I know what you're thinking my gosh look how adorable what places fill ponytails are okay. I walked for 15 minutes I did a total distance 4.53 miles I'm very sweaty I'm out of breath because of the oxygen that is needed for cellular respiration to occur you should already know that autotrophs make their own food and that heterotrophs acquire food by eating other organisms cellular respiration is how both of these types of organisms use that food break it down so that energy can be created and then the sales of the organism that energy to carry on cellular activities so any organisms that contain cells with mitochondria in them should be able to perform cellular respiration such as myself my cells have mitochondria in them especially my muscle cells so I am able to perform cellular respiration so all of these organisms in this illustration would be perform cellular respiration including certain types of bacteria it would require the organism to taken as reactants glucose and oxygen form the cellular respiration and in the cellular respiration would produce the following items as products water carbon dioxide and ATP energy in the ATP energy would be the ultimate product that organism wants to produce if we were going to record cellular respiration as a chemical formula then it would look like this only left we have are reactants and they include a molecule of glucose which is C6 1206 and 6 molecules of oxygen which is 602 and then the products on the right that are being produced are six carbon dioxide molecules that is listed as 6:02 + 6 water molecules which is the 6 H2O plus there is one of the energy produced in the form of ATP the ATP like I said earlier is ultimately what the organism sales want to create carbon dioxide molecules in the water molecules are both considered waste products there are three steps involved in cellular respiration and two of the steps that are involved in cellular respiration take place in the mitochondria so in order for an organism to be able to perform cellular respiration it must contain mitochondria within its cells mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell because I have such an essential role in cellular respiration which is ultimately going to produce energy for the sale soloist let's look at the basic structure of a mitochondrion noticed that there are some Falls within the structure of the mitochondria referred and these are referred to as Christie you have an internal fluid-filled cavity which is called The Matrix and then you have two parts to the membrane you have membrane portion that is outermost and then you have the innermost mitochondrial membrane and with between those two membranes there is an intermembrane space and all of these are essential parts of the mitochondria the next we will have an extremely simplified explanation as to what occurs during the three steps of cellular respiration the first of these three steps is called glycolysis and it doesn't happen in the mitochondria it happened outside of the mitochondrion in the cytoplasm so what happens during glycolysis is a molecule of glucose is broken down is broken down to prove 8 molecules are created in column 2 pyruvic acid molecules as this breaking down of the glucose occurs and created 280 these are going to be created along with two nadh molecules discuss what happens with these nadh molecules later but the cell wanted to create the two molecules Alice's illustration that you're looking at it also is going to occur in the absence of oxygen oxygen will not show up until the materials move into the Monica two and three of cellular respiration occur there are some simple organisms that do not contain mitochondria that perform a simple version of glycolysis known as fermentation to make energy that is pretty much everything that I would like for you to know about glycolysis now we're going to take the Peru vase that was created during glycolysis and move it into the mitochondria were to take part in the sea step of cellular respiration which is called the Krebs cycle or you can also call it by the name citric acid cycle the Krebs cycle basically has two parts to it and both the parts of the Krebs cycle occur in the Matrix and the cristae of the mitochondria in the first part of the Krebs cycle occurs when pyruvate becomes transformed into something called acetylcholine when this occurs two substances are released one of them is a carbon dioxide molecule and the other one is a molecule of nadh there are two pyruvate molecules must be processed during the Krebs cycle that means that there are two molecules of each of the substances that created two nadh molecules now the nadh we'll talk about later on but now we part 2 of the Krebs cycle acetylcholine from part one is going to form a substance along with another material called laksa Low acetate now the sub these two are going to eat something citrate or citric acid citric acid is what gives the kreb cycle its other name which is the citric acid cycle because this citrate or citric acid is going to be broken down during the second part of the kreb cycle is broken down there are four substances that are going to be released in those four substances are three molecules of nadh two molecules of carbon dioxide molecules and one molecule of a substance called fadh2 is there a to prove a the Krebs cycle that means that they're also going to be two citrate molecules that are created in sister to citrate molecules that are created that means those four substances that were released when the citrate down have to double so really there going to be 6 in ADH is that are released there going to be for carbon dioxide molecules that are released there going to be a cheese that are released and they're going to be fadh2 that are released we'll talk about what happens with the nadh molecules in a moment as well as the fadh2 molecules but the four carbon oxides are as a waste product by the sale and the two gtp's are going to quickly and easily transform into two ATP molecules which the cell wants energy as an energy source so by the end of the Krebs cycle cellular respiration there have been four atp's that have been created to came from glycolysis and the other two came from the Krebs cycle itself there have also been six carbon dioxide molecules that have been created as waste product and that accounts for all of the carbon dioxide that is created during cellular respiration so that brings us to the last step of cellular respiration and that step is called the electron transport chain and this particular step occurs in the membrane of the mitochondrion and it definitely has to occur in the presence of oxygen now if you will rock 2 nadh has that were created during glycolysis and during the Krebs cycle part 1 there were also two nadh that were created and in the second part the Krebs cycle their worst nadh is that were created so that gives us a total of nadh is also during the latter part of the Krebs cycle kdhnews that were created cereals are going to be transported over to the electron transport chain and they're going to be process there nadh has and these fadh2 are really carrier molecules and they are carrying hydrogen ions nadh and fadh2 molecules are going to release the hydrogen ions that they are carrying into the intermembrane space of the mitochondria this is all part of step 3 of cellular respiration and step three once again is known as the electron transport chain so as its electron transport chain is occurring the hydrogen ions that piled up in the intermembrane space are going to be pumped from there into the Matrix and acid the hydrogen ions from the intermembrane space into the Matrix Matrix occurs energy is going to be generated and this energy is then going to be used to bond a phosphate route to an ADP molecule transforming the ATP molecule into a molecule of ATP and there is enough energy that is generated during this process to make approximately 32 ATP molecules during this electron transport chain so the 32 atp's from the electron transport chain plus the two he's from glycolysis and the two ATP from the Krebs cycle gives us a grant approximately a grand total of 36 atp's that were made during the cellular respiration process can then be used to energize the activities that the cells must perform on a regular basis so we have accounted for both of the reactants of cellular respiration the glucose molecule energy glycolysis process and oxygen cycle and especially during the electron transport chain we also accounted for all of the 36 atp's that were created as a product and the waste product of the six carbon dioxide molecules that were also created and released by the cell what we have not accounted for are the six water molecules SoDo 6 water molecules came about because as part of the electron transport chain the leftover hydrogen's are going to combine with the leftover oxygens and they are going to create those six molecules of water and those six water molecules will eventually be released as a waste product by the cell so when it comes to Cellular that means that all of the reactants as well as all of the products have been accounted for and cellular respiration will continue over and over and over in the organism as long as the organism is living and need energy also as a side note that means on a cellular level that my mitochondria were working way harder than I ever dreamed I was working on that treadmill
